The performance reflects the company’s continued expansion beyond traditional voice services as digital products account for a larger share of earnings.

Why MTN Nigeria Data Revenue Grew 56.2% in Q1 2026

‎MTN Nigeria’s data revenue grew 56.2% in Q1 2026 as heavier customer usage continued to lift monetisation across its network.

Data traffic rose 22.9% during the quarter, while average monthly usage per subscriber increased 12.3% to 14.3GB, indicating that existing users consumed significantly more data than a year earlier.

Smartphone penetration also climbed 5.5 percentage points to 66.2%, expanding the share of subscribers able to access higher-value internet services.

MTN said continued 4G and 5G network expansion, alongside growth in active data subscribers, further supported the increase by improving coverage and service accessibility across its footprint.

How Smartphone Adoption Is Driving MTN’s Network Monetisation

Rising smartphone adoption is increasing MTN Nigeria’s ability to monetize its network beyond basic connectivity.

As more subscribers shift from feature phones to smartphones, a larger share of MTN’s customer base can access data-intensive services such as video streaming, social media, messaging platforms, and mobile productivity apps.

Smartphone penetration reached 66.2% in Q1 2026, meaning more than two-thirds of MTN’s users now sit within the operator’s higher-value digital ecosystem.

That shift is driving heavier bundle purchases and lifting average revenue per user as digital consumption becomes more embedded in daily customer behaviour.

What Drove MTN Nigeria’s Fintech Transaction Growth?

MTN Nigeria’s fintech transaction volume grew 25.2% in Q1 2026 as adoption of its digital payments ecosystem continued to expand.

The increase was supported by broader use of MoMo wallets for transfers and payments, growth in merchant acceptance across the platform, and stronger cross-selling of airtime, data, and other digital services within MTN’s financial ecosystem.

Continued expansion of agency banking channels and customer wallet onboarding also widened fintech access, helping MTN process more transactions across its payments infrastructure during the quarter.

MTN Nigeria’s digital growth also points to a wider market reality

Nigeria’s telecom monetisation opportunity remains far from saturated despite rising smartphone and fintech adoption.

MTN continues to outpace rivals in converting network scale into higher-value digital revenue, underscoring how uneven competitive execution remains across the sector.

In a market of more than 200 million people, the fact that one operator still dominates much of the digital transition suggests Nigeria’s telecom and fintech opportunity is still materially under penetrated.
