The AI Economy Creates Value Across Multiple Industrial Layers

One cycle of AI investment now generates commercial value across multiple industries rather than a single technology company.

Cloud platforms capture revenue by providing computing capacity, chip designers benefit from processor demand, and semiconductor manufacturers supply the memory and components required to expand AI infrastructure.

The same investment continues creating economic value as it moves through each stage of the industrial system.

Recent earnings illustrate that progression. Microsoft Cloud generated $59.3 billion in revenue during the quarter ended June 2026, while annual Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time.

Nvidia reported $75.2 billion in Data Center revenue in its first fiscal quarter of 2027.

The Semiconductor Industry Association and Deloitte estimate that semiconductors account for more than 95% of the content value of a leading AI server rack, underscoring how much of the AI economy depends on advanced chips, memory, networking and foundational semiconductors.

High Bandwidth Memory Has Become AI’s Most Strategic Product

The commercial value generated across the AI economy is beginning to concentrate around a smaller group of specialised products.

High Bandwidth Memory has become one of the clearest examples as AI infrastructure investment continues to reshape demand across the semiconductor industry.

The product is no longer distinguished solely by its role inside a memory chip.

It is becoming a strategic component around which production capacity, customer commitments and technology roadmaps are increasingly organised.

Recent results from SK hynix and Samsung Electronics reinforce that shift. SK hynix said sustained AI infrastructure investment strengthened demand for HBM and other high-value memory products while supporting long-term supply agreements with major customers.

Samsung expanded HBM4 shipments and progressed HBM4E qualification with strategic customers as AI server memory demand remained strong.

Although neither company discloses standalone HBM revenue, both continue expanding production, customer qualification and long-term supply commitments around High Bandwidth Memory, underscoring its growing strategic importance within AI infrastructure.

Industrial Capability Determines Where AI Value Is Captured

High Bandwidth Memory demonstrates that participation in the AI economy is not equal.

The companies capturing the greatest value are rarely those involved in a single stage of production.

Instead, economic value accumulates as advanced products move through design, wafer fabrication, assembly, testing, packaging and commercial integration.

Industrial capability allows companies to retain a larger share of that value across the production cycle.

That structure also explains why resource ownership alone does not determine who benefits most from the AI economy.

Several African countries supply strategic minerals used across broader electronics and semiconductor supply chains, including copper, cobalt and tantalum.

The OECD, drawing on analysis from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) and Boston Consulting Group (BCG), notes that chip design accounts for approximately half of the total value added in the semiconductor value chain, while fabrication and advanced packaging create additional value before products reach commercial markets.
